Congrats to Dave for being back on top of the Critics Poll as Trumpeter of the Year.

Kudos to the critics for naming Nicole Mitchell as both the Rising Star and Flutist of the Year.

A high-five to Luis Bonilla and Nasheet Waits (both members of Brass Ecstasy) for being cast as the Rising Star Trombonist and Drummer, respectively.

And a round of applause to all the other winners, list-makers, and critics. You can view the list of winners at the Downbeat website. The full list of finalists will appear in the upcoming issue.

Nicole gets her flutes

In a note written on her Facebook page, Nicole goes through a great story of how the situation of her stolen flutes has been resolved. In brief…

On Thursday afternoon, the day before my tour began, a box arrived to my house from Powell Flutes with a new silver flute inside. Powell has agreed on an ENDORSEMENT and offered a nice discount for a piccolo and flute. Mike Reed (I must call him “HERO”) paid the remaining balance on the instruments. Just hours before I had to left for my concerts in Prague, Brest, Barcelona and Madrid, I now have this beautiful instrument to play on.

But you should read the whole thing. If you aren’t friends on Facebook, you can check it over at the Margasak’s Post No Bills.

This just in, and on newstands everywhere:

That’s 10 years in a row for DD, so doesn’t that make him the Trumpeter of the Decade? Kidding. Glad for the continued recognition. Also, it’s 2 years in a row for Donny in the Rising Star category, and 3 years in a row for Nicole — we hope they both keep rising.

Congrats to all the winners and honorably mentioned.

Indigo Trio

Tomorrow night, the 11th of March, Greenleaf artist the Indigo Trio (Nicole Mitchell, Harrison Bankhead, & Hamid Drake) kicks off a short tour of Europe in Katowice, Poland. This is the same band that played for the Live in Montreal show recorded for Greenleaf’s Paperback Series (Volume 3).

Each of the three members of this group play Europe a fair amount with different bands, but as a trio, this is a rare Euro-tour so don’t miss out on seeing these incredible Chicago improvisers in the flesh.
