Jazz on 3 will be broadcasting the Dave Douglas Quintet set at Cheltenham Jazz Festival on Jazz on 3 on May 25, 2009 (and for a short period after that, streaming on their web site). With Orrin Evans, Donny McCaslin, Scott Colley, Clarence Penn. Handwritten Letter, Law of Historic Memory, Earmarks, Blues to Steve Lacy, Invocation, Campaign Trail, War Room. Plus encore: Little Penn. Haven’t heard the recording, but the gig felt great.

UPDATE: For those who missed the stream on Monday, you can stream it for the next week here.

  1. I was fortunate to see the Dave Douglas Quintet in Cheltenham and would like to know whether there are any plans to release this “blistering” concert as a live album or download.

Having been blown away by the band I would love to have that concert as a permanent record.

I’ve been attending the Jazz Festival since I moved to Cheltenham seven years ago, and I can honestly say that concert was not only one of the best at the Festival but one of the best concert’s I ever been to – and I’ve seen a lot of good gig in my 52 years.

The sooner Dave brings this band back to the UK the better – I’ll be first in the queue for tickets!

    Cheers

    Bill

  3. The “Earmarks” from this set is unreal. Blistering.

  4. Couldn’t agree more, Bill, the gig was absolutely the best. My expectations were unfeasibly high as I’ve been a fan for ages but Dave and the quintet easily surpassed them with one of the best group performances I’ve ever heard. And the new tunes were fantastic, especially ‘Handwritten Letter’ – can’t wait for them to be recorded.

Bill’s gig/download suggestion sounds like a great idea – 6 days isn’t enough time to take in all this great music.

(p.s. I saw Donny ripping through some standards with the house band in the hotel bar after the gig – now that’s what I call an encore)

  5. That is quite an encore! Wish someone caught it on video.
