New Sanctuary | Aprile

A note from Dave on this month’s track:

Listeners to the original Sanctuary will hear references to that work in the piece Aprile, from the New Sanctuary project. The arrival of spring is always an exciting time, and a recent week spent in Bergamo, Italy, reminded me how far back that history goes. The image here is from the street calendar in the old square of Bergamo’s upper city, dating back hundreds of years. The fragments of melody in Aprile are drawn from architectural  planning and thought, design in music having so much in common with planning and construction of physical objects. Marc Ribot is a brilliant harmonist, and Susie Ibarra makes deft use of her microtonally pitch kulintang bells on this piece.
