Pre-Order Greg Ward’s Touch My Beloved’s Thought Now!
Inspired by Charles Mingus’ The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady album, Greg collaborated with choreographer Onye Ozuzu to create a new work for a 10-piece jazz ensemble and dancers. The piece debuted at Millenium Park during the 2015 Made in Chicago: World Class Jazz series to wide critical acclaim. As Howard Reich stated in his Chicago Tribune review, “beyond the ferocity of Ward’s solos on alto saxophone and the heady virtuosity of the ensemble he convened, this rethinking of ‘Black Saint‘ stood out for the visual and kinetic offerings of an ensemble of dancers outfitted in black.”
We’re proud to release the live recording from that performance on Greenleaf Music, featuring Greg Ward and his ’10 Tongues’ ensemble. The group includes some of Ward’s longest-standing collaborators and first-call Chicago musicians:
Tim Haldeman, tenor saxophone; Keefe Jackson, baritone and tenor saxophones; Russ Johnson, trumpet; Ben LaMar, cornet; Norman Palm, trombone; Christopher Davis, bass trombone; Jason Roebke, bass; Dennis Luxion, piano; Marcus Evans drums.
Greg Ward & 10 Tongues will play official album release shows in New York (July 8) and Chicago (July 29-30). And this week, the ensemble will perform the entire piece with dancers at Chicago’s Constellation on June 1, 2 and 3.
Check out the Chicago Reader‘s feature on Greg ahead of those shows, including an exclusive preview track!
The album will be released worldwide on July 8.
