Riverside: Live at St. Brigid’s Centre for the Arts, Ottawa

Riverside is a collective idea conceived by saxophonist, Chet Doxas and trumpeter, Dave Douglas. They are joined by bassist Steve Swallow and drummer Jim Doxas in a tribute to one of their common influences, clarinetist / saxophonist and composer Jimmy Giuffre.

Moments earlier on Wednesday night, in the humid basement performance space of St. Brigid’s Centre for the Arts — indeed, a decommissioned church — he had drawn listeners close to him with the spare, touching sounds of his muted horn. Beside the American jazz star, Montreal saxophonist Chet Doxas bolstered the patient, powerful mood with his clarinet. The reedman’s brother Jim Doxas at the drums and electric bassist Steve Swallow, the quartet’s éminence grise, moved the music forward.
